Lyrical Review: Appointment by Jimmy Gait ft Cece

I will say it up-front, Jimmy Gait’s new song, “Appointment” is both simple and beautiful, I guess that makes it simply beautiful? As usual, I will go straight to the lyrics, for that’s my niche in these reviews. I have not been able to locate any online links containing the lyrics. But I wrote them down and translated them into English for the sake of this review. The first verse describes how, in our human society, even if you may be close friends with a VIP, you will still need an appointment to see them in your time of need. This is because their office and the system requires it:

“One day I had a problem, so I decide to go ask for help from my friend. We’ve known each other for a long time. His phone wasn’t going through, so I decided to visit him at his office. At the entrance, I was asked for my ID, and searched for explosives. Then they asked me if I had an appointment. I said I didn’t, the person I was going to see was my friend. They told me, “No, you cannot see the boss. You must have an appointment!”

The chorus then introduces and celebrates the contrast that exists in our relationship with our heavenly Father. Even though He is a VIP, we do not need an appointment to have an audience with Him. Not only can we “see” and talk to him whenever we want, but also wherever we are.

“Thank you Father. I like Your office. I don’t need any appointment.

So, any day, anytime, anywhere I go, I just knock, knock, knock, and enter.”

The second (and final) verse further explores the fact that we can approach God with no need of setting up appointments prior to visiting Him:

“In Your office [Lord], there are no guards at the door, not even a secretary. There’s no diary, on which to schedule our meetings. Any day and anywhere is our meeting time. Therefore, when I have a problem (am in trouble), I don’t have to wait until I get an appointment with You.”

This is an encouraging song, especially to those believers who feel like they have to go through people in order to talk to God. They feel inadequate; not good enough, qualified enough, knowledgeable enough, or important enough. They feel like they do not have an appointment with God, so they go through those who [they think] do – their pastors and teachers. But the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ opened the door for us. He tore the veil that made it impossible to see God without ritualistic appointments. Jesus tore up the veils of appointment books, the rituals of security checks or scans, and the mediation of secretaries…. and became the eternal mediator between man and God.

You see, “we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” [Hebrews 4:15-16]

Jesus invites us to approach God boldly, through Him. He says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” [John 14:6]

Paul reiterates this ease of access to God through Christ by reminding us that, “In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.” [Ephesians 3:12] “For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” [Ephesians 2:18]

Even though Jimmy Gait didn’t directly say it, his message affirms it; No person has to approach God with the fear of being turned away. Let us however never forget to rightly see and say, that Jesus is our appointment; and the Lamb’s Book of Life is the eternal appointment book.
